Summary of Awards

President's Council Service and Teaching Awards

These annual awards were established to recognize full-time, tenure and tenure-track faculty members for a record of teaching excellence and outstanding service at The University of North Texas over at least a five-year period. The $3,000 awards are funded by the President’s Council. These awards will be presented at the Fall 2013 “Salute to Faculty Excellence Dinner and Ceremony.”

All UNT full-time, tenure and tenure-track faculty members are eligible, but previous recipients of the award are not eligible for nomination for five years following the receipt of the award.

Faculty may be nominated for the President’s Council Teaching and Service awards by the Personal Affairs Committee (PAC) of a department, division, school or college or by any self-constituted committee of three or more tenure/tenure‑track faculty members.

Nominations can be made by sending an email to the Faculty Senate Awards Committee at  FacultySenate@unt.edu with the name and contact information of the nominee. Please confirm with the nominee that he/she is willing to apply for the award before submitting his/her name for consideration. Deadline for nominations is February 1, 2013.

Complete application packets should be submitted in PDF format to the Faculty Senate Awards Committee to FacultySenate@unt.edu by 5:00 pm on Thursday, February 28, 2013.

 Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award:

Nominations are requested each fall (usually in October with a deadline to the Faculty Awards Committee in November) by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation. The Faculty Awards Committee selects the nomination packet of one faculty member from UNT to send forward to the foundation for consideration. The Awards Committee may only submit one name to the foundation. The foundation then selects fifteen full time faculty members in Texas for outstanding academic, scientific, and scholarly achievement, and for dedication to the teaching profession.

The purpose of the award is to give recognition to the teaching profession rather than to research, publication, administration, or other such related activity, although these criteria are also considered by the Piper Professor Selection Committee. Each person selected for the "Piper Award" by the Foundation receives an honorarium of $5000.

If the UNT nomination is selected by the Piper Foundation, the recipient is recognized at UNT Fall Faculty Convocation. Anyone from the UNT faculty or student body may nominate any full-time instructor for the award. A letter of nomination must include a paragraph detailing the reason for the nomination, and the person nominated must complete a nomination form. The guidelines for this award may be changed at any time by the foundation.
